Basements, rooftops, above ground, underground, street level, hidden, hipster – we all love small bars but sometimes it’s nice to be able to find your drinking hole without a GPS and to have a bit of elbow room with your bevy.
Well, now there’s Mr Tipply’s. Filling a much-needed gap in CBD drinking dens, Mr Tipply’s is a sizeable establishment on the corner of Kent and King, and it’s big, bold and beautiful.
Named after the elusive man of the world, Mr Tipply, a gentleman at heart, but an avid traveller, this bar is a little bit edgy, with an eclectic anthropological vibe.
Expect knickknacks like terracotta pots and chunky bead necklaces, masks and funky wallpaper. There are high tables, low tables and plenty of cosy booths.
We’re huge fans of the extremely convenient jacket hooks sitting on posts right next to the booths. Like we said –think gentlemen wearing pocket squares who need to take off their jackets to tuck into a hearty meal.
And you will get a hearty meal. The menu, like the venue, criss-crosses the globe. There are melt-in-your-mouth short ribs and Mongolian lamb cutlets that are too tasty to put down, quinoa salads, chicken sang choi bao and Mr Tipply’s 3 Little Ducks (duck sliders done three ways).
Classic bar food – burgers, schnitzel, fries and steaks – are included, and so is an extensive craft beer and wine menu.
The after work drinks crowd is well catered for, with happy hours and weekday specials. Try the Ninja in a Glass if you dare, made of secret Ninja mix, or the Kimchi Mary, a potent take on the Bloody Mary that’s made with aged cabbage and chilli.
Hats off to you Mr Tipply’s.
