Whatever Jim Morrison was singing about in ‘Spanish Caravan’, it probably wasn’t an avocado and poached egg arepa served with herb salad and lime.
But who said gluten-free corncakes and free-range proteins couldn’t be rock ‘n’ roll?
At Suzie Q a little of Woodstock ’69 has been transported to Surry Hills 2013 — literally if you’re staring at the Elliott Landy snap that covers an entire wall — and somehow it makes total sense.
The inviting little café-slash-record store is the brainchild of chef-slash-DJ Jordan Deck, who is a walking, talking, vinyl-spinning reminder that brewing a cup of Dukes single origin is no less cool than mixing up an old fashioned. Though if you’re not opposed to sinking booze at breakfast the Clare Valley reisling can make doing so quite classy.
Deck chooses the tunes (except on ‘Slow Cooked’ Sundays when a guest DJ takes over), names the dishes and prices the records for sale. After you’ve reminisced over The Ghosts of Saturday Night (a prosciutto or ocean trout breakfast platter) or indulged in a bit of Sex and Figs (a selection of cheeses with tomato jam, fresh fruit, Turkish figs and sourdough) you can rifle through an equally satisfying selection of vinyl.
