Sometimes you walk into a shop and you know it’s magical. Tucked away in the street behind Kings Cross Station in Potts Point, Pure and General is one of these rare finds.
Step across the threshold and you are transported to another world. Little pieces of Morocco, London, Paris, Kyoto, New York, Wales, Melbourne, Virginia, Spain and Sweden collide in an explosion of textures, fabrics, handicrafts and one-of-a-kind artworks.
Butterflies rest behind glass, reindeer skins adorn chairs and handmade felted mushrooms, forest folk and peas in pods hangs from the ceiling. Every single item is vintage, antique, handmade by an artisan, or in the case of Bill Fink’s sculptures, a configuration of found objects.
It is one part gift shop, one part homewares store and one part art gallery with the lines blurring between practicality and visceral desire. Me want, me love, me must have. It will be very hard to part with anything you buy here.
Each piece has a life of it’s own, whether it’s a hand embroidered vintage baby blanket stitched by a Granny in the Welsh countryside, a French shepherd’s umbrella, an individually numbered Italian chair or a Japanese broom made by the last remaining traditional broom maker in Kyoto.
