Pizza Glorious Pizza

From traditional Neapolitan-style margheritas to fancy burn-a-hole-in-your-pocket varieties, there’s no arguing Sydney-siders love their Pizza. Thick and fluffy, thin and crispy, white and red bases, stretchy mozza, fluffy crust, “no variations”, chocolate pizza. We’ve got it all.

Here’s a slice-by-slice guide to Sydney’s best pizza joints.

Gigi Pizzeria – Best All Rounder
Great location, great atmosphere, great pizza. Gigi’s has it all. Make a beeline for this hustling King Street pizza house and prepare yourself for a knockout base (Neapolitan style) and a good mix of traditional and gourmet toppings. The margherita is a stand-out and cross your fingers for the gorgonzola and fig special.

Lucio Pizzeria – It’s All About The Base
Thin and stretchy with a perfectly crisped fluffy crust – Lucios delivers the ultimate base. Think traditional Neapolitan style pizza served straight up with ‘no fuss’. Order the ‘Lucio’ and get the best of both of worlds: half margherita / half calzone. Who said you couldn’t have your cake and eat it too?

The Cornerhouse – Best Gluten Free
Hoorah! A gluten free pizza that doesn’t double as a frisbee. Light and crispy, and tastes, well, exactly like a regular pizza. We dare you to order a gluten free base on the sly and share it with your friends – we bet they’ll be none the wiser.

Pompei’s – Family Friendly
This hustling Bondi Beach pizzeria is a favourite among the family crowds. You’ll have no problems getting the littlies to chow down a pizza or housemade pasta at this popular (recently refurbished) beachside eatery. Hot tip: use the gelato bar as blackmail for good behaviour! If you’re not the waiting type, walk up the hill to Gelbison Pizzeria for a slightly more rustic vibe.

The Forresters – The Splurge
Named ‘Pay Day Pizza’, you better save your pennies for a piece of this not-so-humble pizza pie. Topped with lobster meat, truffled salami and truffle oil, this bad boy will set you back fifty big ones. If you’re on a budget, head down on a Wednesday night for $3 slices (sorry folks, ‘Pay Day Pizza’ not included).

Vacanza Pizzeria – All You Can Eat
Round up the troops and head upstairs at Waverley’s favourite local pizza joint. $35 will get you all the pizza and antipasti you can eat and friendly service to boot (for groups of ten or more).

Ventuno – Best Views
Soak up Harbour views and the rather cultured crowds at Sydney Theatre Company’s next-door neighbour. Authentic Italian pizza meets great booze at this Walsh Bay eatery. Go on a Sunday night for pizza and glass of wine or beer for $25.

Rosso Pomodoro – Who Said Pizza’s Not A Dessert?
Leave room for dessert. Hell, skip mains all together and get your laughing gear around the Calzone Alla Nutella – a folded pizza filled with hot oozy Nutella covered in toasted almond flakes.
