Markets are wonderful creations. Lots of lovely things coming together in the one place – they’re usually filled with interesting one-offs, or organic produce from ‘Dave the carrot guy’.
Markit, taking place at Federation Square on Sunday May 25 is no different. For one day Fed Square will see more than 100 stalls selling everything from ceramics, homewares, jewellery, fashion, stationery, to prints. It’s being said that this year’s exhibitors are among some of Australia’s best independent designers. The Atrium and Deakin Edge Theatre will be transformed into a marketplace for some of our country’s finest.
Some of the labels at Markit have recently been overseas collaborating with the fashion industry’s best. Tanner + Teague design children’s wear with a nod to European tradition. One half of the duo spent time working as a patternmaker in London and Paris for Vivienne Westwood. Takeawei, who creates beautiful ceramics worked as a textile designer for a range of brands including Donna Karan and Vera Wang, while Soft Constructions creator Seonaidh Murphy who creates woven textiles has worked with Versace and Burberry’s manufacturers. Why would you go anywhere else you might ask, when we have all this talent right here?
Designers joining Markit for another year include Emily Green with her brightly coloured jewellery, Bridget Bodenham, Angus and Celeste, Otto and Spike, Able and Game, and Third Drawer Down. Newcomers include Mavericks Laces, a bright coloured laces duo from Melbourne, Zin + Burt, Sandra Eterovic, Hello Toes, and Surfing Sloth and Ghostly.
We’re thinking this might have to be an all day thing. Stalls open at 10am, and we suggest you get to Markit, to Markit early.
