Partnerships can be a magical thing. Taking two different experiences and combining them in one. Recently, I was fortunate enough to attend the ultimate partnership between the elite and premium Melbourne Sofitel hotel, who have partnered with the NGV. They are currently exhibiting the most mind-blowing exhibition of its kind, bringing 3000 years of history into the gallery – “Pharaoh”.

To bring this fascinating and historical exhibition to life for their guests’ pleasure, the Sofitel have everything covered with a unique and immersive experience. They have cleverly designed one of their elite ambassador suites in Pharaoh themed attire. From the moment I enter, I feel like I’m Pharoah in a luxury fantasy Egypt land. There’s a decadent grand bed with astounding views. Premium plush Egyptian pillows and ancient jugs. Even the smallest touches like Egyptian soaps and bathroom fragrances, and little gold Egyptian trinkets that sit on the coffee table. As I wander through the stunning Pharaoh transformed suite, I notice the large bold and beautiful painting of Queen Nefertiti, the most famous matriarch of the era. I haven’t even visited the exhibition, and I’m already overwhelmed in awe.

It doesn’t stop at just the room. The Sofitel have ensured that the delectable food on offer at a high tea includes pharaoh inspired palate pleasers. Starting off with hibiscus tea and cocktails with aromatic spices like saffron and cardamom, its all so cleverly executed with such intense research to replicate exactly what was consumed in ancient Egyptian times. I eagerly demolish delicious pyramid egg sandwiches laced with gold and Egyptian spiced lamb kofta kebab. But the highlight are the Pharoah cakes. Its not every day you get to eat a deep rich dark chocolate brownie with whipped ganache, and at the same time, bite off Pharaoh’s head. So innovative, thoughtful, and highly amusing!
Whilst I always thought of the Sofitel as a large hotel chain, it was the opposite. The enthusiasm, hospitality and genuine care we received, was impeccable. What really impressed me is their personalisation, as each guest is asked where they would like to dine and their specific cuisine preferences – and the rest is taken care of.

Whilst I would’ve been happy to just sit in the hotel and revel in the Egyptian glory, the main part was still to come – the exhibition. Like Cinderella at her ball, a carriage (driver) was waiting out the front to escort us door-to-door, directly to the NGV in the most seamless, glamourous manner.
We arrive at the NGV, and my jaw drops. While they host many exhibitions, this grand, mysterious Egyptian themed Pharoah is probably one of the most spectacular yet. We walk through the gallery, perplex and bewildered at the sheer intricacies and rich history of the ancient times. Each piece on display, has an explanation and chunk of history, making this an educational and eye-opening event.
If you’re an art, culture, luxury and even foodie fan, the partnership package between the Melbourne Sofitel and the Pharoah exhibition at the NGV is one of the most memorable and unique experiences one could ever have.
