Ink well

Your mum hates it. Your dad doesn’t know about it. You love the secret thrill of knowing it’s there.

Tattoos aren’t for everybody but for those who are, they are an addictive obsession. Ranging from the tiniest blue star to a Raphaelite goddess that spans ankle to armpit, tattoos are as unique and intriguing as the skins they’re in.

It’s not just a matter of downing a bottle of rum and wending your way in to get Mum inked in a heart. The process begins by going into the shop, looking through the artists’ books and deciding upon a design, style and tattooist.

Some artists specialise in tribal; others in Japanese; others in 1950’s retro. Tattoos last longer than most marriages so choose carefully.

If you want custom art, commission an artist to go away and sketch. If you want something off the shelf, book an appointment and brace yourself.

And as Edith Piaf would say, non regrette rien.
