This new haunt, seductively tucked away from the boisterous chapel street, has changed faces several times . From much loved Asian Saigon Sally, then a few unmemorable ones, ‘Duke Lane’ has emerged with a big personality. A Latin inspired beauty with a distinct sweet tooth.
The Design
Off the beaten Chapel track, the inside of this sexy number gives a vibe of industrial sheik. A simple but elegant décor, apricot terrazzo table tops and polished black chairs. There’s mood lighting for a romantic affair, and a gregarious bar with shining stars of the most delectable liquors on offer.
Latin Eats
Obligatory to begin the meal with Latino arepitas. A small round disc made of corn, topped with a mount of moistly melting slow cooked brisket. PSA – while this looks petite, it is not an ideal date food. Not only do we need about 10 napkins to mop up all the aromatic spices in the meat juice and falling creamy avocado, we end up licking our fingers ungracefully to make sure nothing is left.
Big, bold latino steak is where it’s at. Succulent charred porterhouse is seasoned with their signature spice rub and has a juicy pink centre. It’s served alongside a house made robust chimichurri, bursting freshness and acid to cut through the marble. A glass of Argentinian Malbec clutches perfectly onto those heavy cheek tannins and its an OMG moment right there.
Shot Shot Shot
But let’s be clear, there’s really one reason you come to this place, it’s for the shots ! Not just dessert, Duke Lane offer shots in the most unique and deliciously indulgent, hedonistic way.
The ‘Cupcake’ may sound like something I’d give to my five-year-old.’ But don’t be fooled, despite the whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles this is X-rated, made of cake and white chocolate liqueur. And the ‘’Churro’ a cinnamon whiskey and baileys shot has a real life sugar edible churro.
Sweet dreams are made of these – Duke Lane does not disagree.
