Cloth Fabric

Babes in armchairs

Born in a tin shed in the countryside, Cloth Fabrics are conceived from 20 metre bolts of natural hemp, linen, jute, denim, silk and organic cotton. They begin to take form under the creative gaze of artist Julie Paterson whose designs draw on the strength, austerity and scale of the Australian landscape.

Paterson, who has been working the ‘old-fashioned’ way for the past 15 years, brings her screen prints to life using a long table, non-toxic inks and dyes and two highly skilled hands.

Once the ‘babies’ have been line-dried, they are ready for their journey to Surry Hills where they will be turned into lampshades, cushions and used in furniture upholstery by local craftspeople.

When they are fully fledged adults, the final objects join their friends – original artworks, clay pottery, woven rugs and hand printed wallpaper – in the Cloth shop in preparation for their imminent adoption by loving parents, interior designers and unsuspecting passersby drawn in by their beautiful complexions.
