When we got word that macaron maestros MakMak and Bakedown Cakery were teaming up, our mouths started watering immediately. And a sneak peak at this brand new boutique store has us down right drooling.
MakMak mastermind Carlos Heng and Bakedown leading lady Jen Ho first met at a MakMak’s macaron class – it was ‘a meeting of the minds’ says Carlos and we’d probably say it was a meeting of taste buds. These guys have a very similar sense of design, attention to detail and ability to test the boundaries of the dessert world.
MADE is your new CBD sweet stop
You can see that (and taste it) at their new bolt hole boutique on Clarence Street. Tucked into the Gaffa Gallery, in what was once a prison cell for the former police station, this store is bring beautiful handmade desserts to the CBD. From the astro turf and Mondrian-esque feature wall to a MakMak bright pink raspberry and cream macaron and Bakedown lime and coconut cactus-shaped chocolates, it’s all bright and beautiful.
The rows of desserts under the glass countertop showcase the best of what these two dessert heavyweights have to offer – and then some. We’re expecting the 36 hour chocolate cookies to be gone before they’ve fully cooled down. Made from a dough that’s proved for 36 hours, they’re 40% dark Belgian chocolate and just the right mix of gooey and crunchy, with a genius sprinkle of Maldon sea salt that seals the deal. And the freshly baked cupcakes won’t be on the shelves for long either, with weekly changing flavours and a buttercream that melts in your mouth.
