Lygon Street in Carlton is known for pizza, pasta, gelato, and university students. It’s hard to visit the well-known strip and not encounter one of two of them. Popol_Nah has something to say about that. Found at 171 Lygon Street, Carlton (the Grattan Street end), Popol_Nah, which means ‘The People’s House’ is bringing us an 80-seat casual dining experience that focuses heavily on Latin American cuisine.
The venue is the brainchild of Carolyn Ferreira, plus the cooking of chef Cali Rivera who comes to us direct from New York. Rivera has created an affordable menu that takes the roots of Latin American food and makes it accessible to the Melbourne palate.
Polpol_Nah’s menu sees traditional dishes like ceviche, empanadas and bocadillos, slow-cooked meats with house-pickled vegetables and patatas bravas, the Latin American potato chip. And yes, there will be homemade alfajores. A dinner wouldn’t be complete without shortbread and dulce leche.
The space is easy on the eyes with white walls, black details and wood touches here and there. Designers Peter Strateas and Mario-Luca Carlucci helped create the look and feel of the branding and interiors. And the colours of the space drew heavily upon the influence of Mexican artist Frida.
Bringing the philosophy of the People’s House to Carlton, Popol_Nah is about creating good food, good drinks, and good times.
