A perfectly springy carrot cake, a peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie that snaps just right, and a loaf of sourdough with a soft centre and nice crisp outside. Matt Forbes can bake, and now he has his own place to do it. Cobb Lane bakery and café has opened in Yarraville and following our nose, we’re making the trip.
Matt Forbes, known for his sweet treats that can be found in cafes across Melbourne, has trained with some of the best. UK born and raised, Forbes trained with Michelin Starred chefs Raymond Blanc from Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons and Michel Roux from The Waterside Inn. Once in Melbourne, before opening Cobb Lane, he was found in Vue de Monde, Maze and Mr Hive Kitchen & Bar.
Cobb Lane itself is small, seating less than 20 sugar seekers (and worth the squeeze). Carrot cake is topped with creamy cream cheese icing while art and dessert come together in the passion fruit, Earl Grey, hazelnut and milk chocolate creation. For those not there for the coffee and cake, there is a small (soon to grow) brunch menu of about eight items. Think asparagus spears with polenta, poached egg, hazelnuts, watercress and cream or a full British breakfast, black pudding and all.
Less than ten minutes from the CBD, Yarraville is a cute little town, with skinny streets and a small main strip, and they’ve won this round. See you in Yarraville.
