Like a fine wine (or Matt Damon), some things get better with age. But few have ripened so gloriously as Carriageworks – the home of new international art fair Sydney Contemporary 2013.
Not only does the old Eveleigh Rail Yards now play host to Fashion Week, a drive-in cinema and Sydney’s best salt croquettes – it’s now getting the largest gathering of international galleries Australia has ever seen. 11 countries and four continents of them, to be precise.
Sydney Contemporary is an international art fair Sydney can be proud of. Think high end art curation of emerging and established artists complete with a first night fête, immersive videos, large-scale installations and illuminating workshops. Where you have the rare opportunity to see and buy artwork from over 80 Australian and international galleries.
If you’re still coming down from Royal Wedding Fever, Liam Benson’s poignant and personal commentary on the matriarchal theme could be the cure. Or tune into Talk Contemporary’s refreshing spin on a Sunday treat – ‘Creative Brunch’ comes with words rather than hollandaise sauce – you’d be hard-pressed to find more interesting brunching buddies than Kylie Kwong, Rachel Griffiths and artist Del Kathryn Barton.
Other informative tête-à-têtes address the anti-aesthetic versus beauty in art; whether to collect from Australia or internationally, and the crossover between art and fashion.
It’s not only the artworks that will be coveted during the fair, it’s the effortless style too with Net-A-Porter and Mr Porter.Com curating a special edit of the season’s coolest art-inspired pieces (see gallery below for a selection). Sydney Contemporary VIP guests can also receive one-to-one style personal styling advice through the Personal Shopping team or get styling tips at the fair.
Incidentally, if you do want a mimosa to wash down the art bonanza, check out the pop-up Petaluma bar.
