Sure, you might crave a particular fresh fruit or vegetable at this very moment but if it’s not the season for them to grow, any samples you do find are most likely ones that have been cold-stored for a ridiculously long time. Not very fresh at all.
Veruca Salt has so much to answer for. She, she wanted it ‘now’ but, really, you can afford to wait if it means that the food you choose is genuinely fresh. Fresh in that uniquely earthy way that only produce right off the farm can deliver. It’s what Georgie’s Harvest promises.
Georgina Dragwidge makes sure of it. Her Stall 50 at the iconic South Melbourne Market is rich with the scent of damp earth. It’s earth that has made it here across the Tasman (from Tasmania, of course), as well as closer to home from our own Victorian backyard.
Potatoes are the hero. And if you thought Coliban was exotic, think again. The most recent website showcase at Georgie’s Harvest featured 25 varieties – including Dutch Cream (mashed, boiled, roasted, pureed or baked), Bintje (potato salad & frying) and Purple Congo (steaming & microwaving). Don’t even get us started on pumpkin. Then there’s beetroot, carrot, chilies, ginger, garlic, onions and other specialty products to spice things up. Anyone for fresh horse radish?
Visit Georgie’s Harvest on a Saturday morning when the locals come in droves to see what’s fresh from the boat and what recipe suggestions the lady herself is offering. No airs and graces of other gourmet food stalls here. Earthiness is in her blood, from a childhood spent visiting local farmer’s markets to the celebration of her recent first anniversary as owner of Georgie’s Harvest.
