Public art is often…difficult. Some people love it and some people hate it. But at the end of the day that’s what it’s really there for. To create reaction, discussion, and often disagreement. But ultimately it brings artwork to the streets, without the stuffy halls of galleries and the prices of museums. MPavilion however is public art and an exhibition space all rolled into one.
The space is an architecture commission by Sean Godsell found in the Queen Victoria Gardens. This incarnation will be open until February 1, 2015, then each year a new architect will be brought in to design a temporary pavilion. An evolving piece of public architecture and design. Talks, workshops, performances and installations will take place here over the next four months.
Each day at 12pm rotating lists of designers and architects will read aloud from Robin Boyd’s bestselling The Australian Ugliness that will no doubt result in heated discussion around design and urban planning.
Complexity of Belonging, a dance piece from Anouk van Dijk (Chunky Move) will explore belonging and the psychology of space in an one hour performance. And on October 21 Rob Adams (director of city design at City of Melbourne) will discuss Melbourne as a design city with a number of contributors including Bernard Salt (KPMG) and Simon Spain (Artplay).
This building is creating a new space for artwork, even if it is temporary. There’s Everyday Coffee pouring for those who like a caffeine hit with their artwork.
