New bars are exciting. They offer the chance of a new local, a new favourite cocktail, and a new place to spend your Friday nights. Lulie St Tavern has just opened its doors and is providing all of the above. The chilled out space from Curtin House staff Jon Farrell and Brendan Kennedy (Rooftop Bar and The Toff) is offering us exactly what we need in a good local. Drinks, a cosy space, and not a whole lot of pretence about it. And something a little less full on than Curtain House tends to be. Minus the endless stairs which is also a win.
The space, like the vibe, is relaxed. Not a whole lot of furniture. One long bar fills the space while some bar stools and wooden chairs keep drinkers happy. So does the menu. A tight, yet considered offering of beers, two on tap at a time, a small handful of cocktails like the espresso martini milkshake, the spiked peach iced tea, and a killer whisky section.
When it comes to the food, there are free peanuts, they’re all for you ordering pizza from Rita’s across the road, and word is a few food trucks are kicking around on the weekends for hungry pub goers. Job done.
The space that Lulie has taken over is going to be demolished in 2017, which is sad for us, but makes the time we spend there even more worth it. Come, drink some beer, play some darts, crack open some nuts. It’s not very complicated and that’s why we’ll be back.
With some venues these days you spend the whole night deciding how you feel about the venue. At Lulie you might just have time to enjoy the people you brought with you.
