Good things come in small packages. A phrase that perfectly describes Nixie Nox, the cute little pub that just opened on Swan Street.
Location
Expecting a standard ‘pub’ large eatery, nestled amongst the kebab shops and boisterous street full of eateries and bars, from the outside, it’s almost missable. But when I do notice it, it’s quite sweet and charming.
Inside, definitely retains a pub vibe, just slightly elevated. A warm and inviting interior with a large bar, discrete but easy to watch TV screens, wooden panels, and comfy seats. Jovial ex-hospo owners Stu and Chris are up for a chat, passionately giving the rundown of their latest baby, Nixie Nox, named after a quirky character from a Dr Seuss book. A perfect fit.

Drinks and Pub Grub
They have a considered, and very affordable drinks list. A big page full of classic cocktail (hard to find a spicy marg with a flawless shaving of chilli, served in a refined stemmed glassware for 20 bucks these days). They explain the entire menu is intentionally priced modestly, so we’re enticed to have seconds. Yes please!
Food choices are a little limited. Snacky share stuff like the yummy fried chicken with a goojoung mayo are a good way to soak up the grog. (Perhaps they’ve been a little too ambitious with the miso mushroom cake. While it sounds creative, what arrives is a big confused pile of black mush). For larger meals, sticking to pub classics like a Parma and chips is the way to go. A tender juicy sous vide chicken fillet with a crunchy case, and oozy mozzarella is a protein plus. (Again, best to steer clear of weird stuff like fermented artichoke, tofu skins and yeast flakes which tastes as strange as it sounds).

A whole lot of beers are a whole lot of fun, and it’s especially so at Nixie Nox boasting an eclectic list on tap. It’s easy to be awed by the varieties on offer like a Wolf of Willows Hazy Pale. And kindly catering for everyone, Stu says there’s still a VB in the fridge (as you can’t be in Richmond without one).

The Vibe
And while soaking up the chilled vibe, bevvy in hand, whisked away in great company, it’s humbling to see how much pride the owners take in their venture. Nothing is too much for them, whether it be meticulously scrubbing the table, deep dive mopping the floor, or passionately stirring a cocktail. All the guys are gung-ho on ensuring each punter who enters, walks out with a smile.
Nixie Nox may be the new baby kid on the block and still in its infancy. But with its strong bones and a few tweaks, watch out for this little pocket rocket.
