Climbing the walls

Vertical Gardens
Bid a black-thumbed farewell to withered herbs and desiccated potplants. The only way, for gardens at least, is up.

The latest trend in inner-city gardening is the vertical garden, as seen in temples of cool such as the Google building, the Qantas lounge and the Marriott foyer.

Simulating the environmental conditions of a cliff-face, the vertical garden not only saves space but also water, time and energy because the plants effectively insulate the wall they are attached to.

If this all sounds a bit DIY daunting, fear not. You can buy a home starter kit from  Fytowall or alternatively, call in the khaki-clad experts from Greenwall to plant your upsides with everything from Amazonian rainforest plants to bromeliads and ferns.

The effect? Eco harmony, design wow factor and a little sigh of peacefulness from passersby.
