Most of Melbourne has a uniform. It’s edgy, minimalist, and always, always on trend. It’s a style that the small bars, laneway restaurants, hotels and of course the people, all ascribe to. The Jazz Corner Hotel, a new boutique hotel on the edge of the CBD has definitely got that formula down pat.
As the name suggests, the hotel pays homage to all things jazz, with the famous Bird’s Basement jazz club sitting alongside the side laneway, and a jazz-themed interior décor that’s seriously sleek. Vinyl record covers line the walls, rooms have retro floor lamps and super comfy leather lounges.
Tucked onto the corner of William and La Trobe Streets, the hotel has a discreet lobby, right next to the bar and restaurant. Like the hotel, the restaurant Beer, Wine & Calzone’s name tells it like it is. Proper Italian pizza and calzone comes straight from the oven, puffed up and full of gooey cheese, with fresh toppings like classic prosciutto and rocket. Add a few glasses of wine or beer and you’ve got a great, easy night in, with the lifts to your hotel room just metres away.
Head upstairs to the apartment-style rooms, which have balconies looking out across the city to the Yarra River. The 180 degree views are best at sunrise and sunset, so those late night jazz souls should take the time to open the curtains wide. There’s also fully equipped kitchens, perfect if you want to start the night with some nibbles and wine, before heading downstairs to a session at Birds Basement. After all, what’s a trip to Melbourne without a bit of live music, and a bit of wining and dining?!
