The Waiting Room bougies up your favourite French bistro classics

Don’t you just love sinking into a plush booth whilst awaiting fabulous food? Located on the ground floor of the Crown Sydney with harbour views, TWR is designed by NYC based Meyer Davis. The vibe is quietly confident luxe with thoughtful but not ostentatious design elements from the Wedgwood crockery to the striking marble bar. Every table features uber-comfy, generous booths that encourage you to linger over the food with fabulous company rather than perch, eat and run as so many other places do.

Once you have settled in to your new nest, it’s time to peruse the menu. Featuring a tight list of the French bistro classics, TWR takes care to highlight local producers, such as Holy Goat cheese and an impressive mix of Australian winemakers.

Champagne, of course…..

Ooh la la! We feel like we are in Paris, so we must have some gorgeous champagne!  Our pick is a glass of Piper Heidsieck ‘Essential’ Cuvee Reservee Extra Brut for $28. Poured at the table into classic Riedel glasses, it is a promising start.

The wild mushroom and gruyere crepe is a perfect partner for champagne. The crepe is light, delicate and very moreish. It’s followed by the Spinach, Tomato and Taleggio quiche with a classic French side salad of bitter leaves with just enough vinaigrette dressing to cut through the cheesy, pastry goodness without overwhelming the flavours.

It’s not easy to find an outstanding beef tartare in Sydney – this one features a cheeky little Asian fusion twist with dried seaweed adding an umami punch and delicate housemade crisps. The tres Français Duck Confit embodies the best of French regional cuisine. It is perfectly cooked and comes with a warm puy lentil and frisee salad. One of our favourites was the Flathead accompanied by a tall copper cup of fries. It’s the right balance of crispness and softness that showcases the freshness of the produce. Simply dip in housemade tartar sauce and go!

A waiting room isn’t normally a place you would choose to spend time in, it’s a necessary step to get you to where you want to go. TWR at Crown Towers is the opposite – it’s the place you’ll choose to wile away a few elegant hours.  If in doubt, head down at the weekend as the DJ and cocktail vibes may change your mind. Perhaps it should be re-named The Staying Room!
