The last big experiment involving you, an ex, and a few broken objects (outside of the actual break-up) didn’t turn out so well. You’re happy to leave experimenting now to the experts and for the next twelve weeks they’ll be congregating at SuperDeluxe; part art gallery, part chill out bar, part club, and replica of Tokyo’s thriving experimental performance space.
Here on our shores courtesy of the 17th Biennale of Sydney, it’s the kind of space where you’ll find bands, DJs, sound artists, dancers, films and informal gatherings.
The calibre of ‘testing’?
Pecha Kucha Nights: rapid fire and random talks with topics that are just as diverse (think a twitter version for slide show presentations).
Dancers: Contact GONZO will perform dance styles ranging from Fight Club inspired fist fights to sophisticated dance. Taketeru Kudo will perform Butoh, a dance incorporating hyper-controlled body movements with grotesque yet beautiful imagery, accompanied by Tetsu Saitoh.
DJS and sound artists: Award-winning Dai Yamamoto in an unforgettable duo with Kazunao Nagata. Akio Suzuki, a sound art pioneer, uses found objects and exquisitely handcrafted instruments from an ancient stone flute to a tin can, while Ujino Muneteru will play pieces constructed from household items such as a blender, drill and hairdryer.
No government grants here, and research that’s anything but dull.
