Dining destination: unknown
The email said ‘Meet at The Cowboy at 7pm’. With this mysterious instruction to guide us, we make our way to the appointed location only to find a motley gathering of expectant diners sauntering in the street, equally puzzled.
Out of an unmarked door, a handsome young man appears and ushers us down a lane, up three flights of stairs and into what looks very much like a lounge room. There’s a pool table, a bar and thousands of books lining the walls.
Introductions are made and we are all handed a Kir Royale. We chat to our fellow diners on the balcony and enjoy a few more drinks before we are summoned upstairs; this time, to take our seats at a dining table that is groaning with freshly prepared Greek fare.
Eggplant balls, haloumi salad, deep fried prawns and calamari … where to begin? One of the diners is a vegetarian but this is no problem.
The grand piano in the corner kicks into life when our multi-talented Chef Meg Hewitt plays some Debussy for us and then, in a final master stroke, she brings out dessert. It’s ice cream – that much we can tell – but despite a familiar flavour it’s impossible to pinpoint. Meg eventually lets us off the hook and tells us that it’s ‘cereal milk’ flavoured.
Not knowing where the night will take you is a really good thing, especially if Meg is cooking.
