Over at Bodeguita Danny Parreno’s boys mix a mojito so good that happy hour often turns into So You Think You Can Dance: Cuban Edition. The drinks are equally as good at his new digs, only there’s no dance floor to distract you from your cebiche.
Pachamama House is Bodeguita all grown up. It’s moved out of the city and into a slick apartment building on Goulburn Street, tricked out in dark wood dining tables, designer wine racks and smooth ‘Osaka chic’ lighting.
If you’re a fan of continuity you’ll appreciate the Japanese touches on the menu too — the Nisei cevibe almost trumps their sour-crunchy classic one. But Parreno really hits it home when playing with the flavours of Peru. Smokey pulled pork is strung atop a Mantecoso cheese pizza, and the Chilean sea bass with roasted scallops is life-changing. Try his empanada and you’ll never look at our humble pie in the same way again.
It’s not all seriousness though. Happy hour (5 – 7pm daily) will get you anything off the cocktail chalk board for $12. Sink a couple of pisco sours before moving on to an Argentinian wine and you’re off to a fine start.
Getting older isn’t such a bad thing after all.
