They say black never goes out of style, but apparently neither do kaleidoscopic prints falling somewhere between childlike whimsicality and a full-blown acid trip.
For more than 60 years Marimekko has been creating clothing and textiles coveted for their original prints and vibrant colours, a few of which might already brighten up your home and wardrobe. But now you can have them minus the equally eye-popping mark-up prices.
You’d be hard-pressed to miss the Finnish brand’s new King Street home, which sits in stylish but comparatively monochromatic company across from Apple and Louis Vuitton. Inside the art deco two-storey building you’ll find a rainbow of unconventionally patterned clothing, interior décor, textiles bags and other accessories, laid out on wooden tables and up lofty white walls with all the artful precision of a Marimekko colour chart.
And with the journey of each pattern from designer’s sketch to printable pattern taking about a year, these goods have been a long time coming, in more ways than one.
