Looking to wear a piece of the past? Vintage clothing can give you that nostalgic link. Not the ‘vintage’ from two seasons ago, we’re talking fashionable statements that are quality, desired and typically older than a good whisky. A piece that you can pick up later this week at the Sydney Vintage Clothing, Jewellery & Textiles Show.
So what’s fashionable right now from past season fashions? Mrs Janel Morrissey, show organiser will tell you it’s anything from the 40’s with structured form or military-inspired looks. Think of the diligent secretary, in her delicate puffed sleeved blouse and high-waisted skirt, or double-breasted jackets with epaulets. As for accessories, bold art-deco jewellery never goes out of style, or look out for simple design brooches speckled with diamantes.
You can meander through the treasures of 62 vendors showcasing their vintage clothing, accessories, lace, linen, small collectibles, and textiles. Watch a live lindy-hop demo or partake in a step back in time with the best-dressed vintage competition on Friday.
The weekend will hold workshops on how to re-create the golden age glamorous pin up look. Mistresses Christine and Lecia from the Lindy Charm School for Girls will show you how to get your red lipstick, bullet bra, garters and precariously high heels on, and make sure that your victory rolls bounce in tune with an enticing wiggle walk.
If you’re young-ish, you’ll adore vintage for being fashionable and unique. If you’re the sophisticate you’ll covet it for the quality and individuality, and if you’re older, it’s pleasantly familiar; what you’ve worn a by-gone era before.
