Lucy Loneragan’s chair affair
Some people are fond of furniture but Lucy from Love at 1st Sight is smitten.
This whimsical Surry Hills-based interior designer has turned her fetish into a thriving antique and vintage furniture restoration business where she breathes new life into neglected old dears with ‘good, strong bones’.
Lucy says, “In the vintage furniture world, a high level of craftsmanship usually equals timeless design. If I come across an old charmer that has a good foundation, I go for it.”
Note: You will not find any run-of-the-mill fabrics or designs in Lucy’s shop. Everything she does has a surprising element that contrasts old with new; faded with fluoro.
She explains: “What excites me is taking the design of a piece of furniture into unchartered waters from how it might’ve traditionally been upholstered or polished. It’s like allowing the pieces to breathe express themselves.”
So there are no rules about treating the Granny chairs with respect? “No! All I’ll say is that there should be a rule against keeping beautiful antique pieces cooped up in a garage getting eaten away by creepy crawlies,” says Lucy.
