Are your thumbs greener than organic kale? Does your Instagram read like a digital diary for the progress of your cacti collection? Or maybe you’re just keen to try your hand at growing fresh basil? Whether you’re an avid gardener or a green thumb greenie, here are the best places in Sydney to make plant purchases good for both wallet and conscience.
Preloved Roots
If you treat potted orchid flowers with the same affection as you would an actual human child, the people behind Preloved Roots might be your new best friends. A sort of orphanage for jilted flowers, herbs, shrubs and succulents, these guys house the plants others cast aside until they find a loving new home. You can browse the current selection on their facebook: Recent finds include peppermint (great for teas), Murraya and a Japanese Maple tree. Prices are excellent, especially when your plants pre-potted in terracotta or sandstone.

Daisy’s Oasis
Under a slightly bizarre Egyptian-style sign lies this potted plant oasis. Any form of indoor and outdoor pot plant you can think of you’ll probably be able to find if you don’t get distracted by the kitschy figurines: There are Peace Lillies and palms, cacti and Croton, Zanzibar Gems and beautiful Flamingo Flower plants, and planter boxes for balconies. Many you can take home for less than $30, and even the more peculiar ones will likely still leave you change from $100.

Garden Life
Abundant with garden goods specially chosen for their flare and style, this is the kind of place you’ll enter to pick up a quirky gift and leave with a trolley full of everything required for a complete garden overhaul. Besides lilies and ferns there are hanging lamps, water features, plants and furniture, and the on-site Twig Café serves up sustainable and locally sourced produce with their organic Single Origin Roasters coffee. The perfect place to sit and contemplate purchasing that marble carved tulip planter.
