Guide to Halloween 2012

While the excitement of most annual holidays wears thinner as you grow older and less gullible, Halloween only gets better. Not only can you eat your body weight in sugar but you don’t have to have to electrocute your elderly neighbours with fake chewing gum to do so, and you’ve probably got better costume ideas than cutting eye holes in a sheet.

Make the most of it at one of these seductively spooky events and stay up well past your bedtime this year.

Superhero Halloween at Marquee (26 October)

If you’d rather stay out of trouble on a weeknight then head to Marquee tonight for another chance to cash in on your creativity. Dress as a superhero and evade the $30 cover, indulge in a complimentary libation and get a chance to win a table with $1000 bar tab if your group of costumed revelers is one of the first five to arrive. Lycra never seemed so attractive.

Spooky Saturday Lunch (28 October)

Pigs ear and stinky mayo, Lambs brains and yuzu pepper. A bit of bloody jelly, octopus tentacles and fish balls from the cauldron and Ants on a Larp. Tap into a 7 course banquet designed to frighten and delight. $75 per reveller with a cocktail on arrival.

Vampires Feast at Gazebo (31 October)

Celebrate Transylvanian style as Gazebo eschews lush foliage for the candelabras and coffins of Dracula’s Castle from 6.30pm on Halloween night. Wash down a morbid Matt Kemp-designed feast including Coffin Bay Oysters and Lambs Tongue lettuce with bloody cocktails and Young Blood shiraz. Dress for the affair, but probably forgo the plastic fangs. Tickets are $60, which includes food and drinks.

Heaven and Hell at Marquee (31 October)

From 9pm on Halloween night indulge your inner demon in Marquee’s devilishly styled Main Room, or proceed straight through to the gates of heaven in the Boom Box. Entry and your first drink are free if you’re in costume, and it’s an excellent excuse to indulge your lascivious side — sexiest costume wins a cool $5000, which is better than any amount of candy. Get a taste of something more savoury from self-styled underground DJ duo Peking Duck.

The Halloween Murder Mystery Night (31 October)

Halloween isn’t just about being greedy. Indulge in the name of charity at Sky High Events’ macabre murder mystery party in the St James Hotels’ Mirabelle Room while raising funds for Youth Off the Streets and tucking into exquisite edible treats.

The Ghostbusters Halloween Spooktacular (28 October)

Join a team of the finest professional paranormal investigators and eliminators at The Hayden Orpheum as Sydney’s opulent cinema palace gets a morbid makeover. Sydney Retro Cinema is hosting a screening of Ghostbusters in all its sci-fi/comedy/horror mash-up glory, followed by a spooky ’80s costume contest and live show. Expect hilarity and drink specials all night long.
