Double Bay. A suburb most recently known for restaurant floral theft, than a cutting edge bar scene. And yet, here you are.
The brainchild of The London Hotel’s Ben May, Sydney sommelier Andrew Jamieson and a couple of other hospitality lifers, Mrs. Sippy is a hard-working, multi-tasking establishment, cranking out tasty breakfasts, a ‘lil something for the ladies who lunch, bar bites and simple, pleasing dinner classics like steak frites with café de Paris butter and good ‘ol fish and chips.
It’s an understated space, all wooden floorboards, exposed brick and blackboards, which suit its multifunctional café by day/bar by night purpose and lends a relaxed, been-there-forever feel.
But this is Double Bay (home of the gin’n’twin set) so let’s talk booze. There’s an intelligent wine list, curated by Jamieson as well as some less than likely beers on offer, and while the upstairs cocktail bar is still a work in progress, the charming courtyard and laneway bars make laidback spaces for…er.. ‘sipping’ fresh spring cocktails, like the Seven Shillings (Jim Beam rye, pineapple, lemon and mandarin juice, apricot brandy and dry vermouth).
It seems the tides are turning when it comes to new destination drinking, and it’s nice to see that bar owners realise there are other suburbs besides Surry Hills and Darlinghurst, in which to share a drink among friends.
