You’re not a greedy person. You just want to try everything. It’s not your fault that you grew up with a big family with a big appetite, and you hang out with a large crew.
So finding District Dining, a relaxed place dine on modern morsels meant for sharing, is a welcome event. Warren Turnbull (two hatted Assiette) and Mimi Gilmour have opened the doors to their first joint venture – the next comes at their wedding later this year.
Walk past the Mondrian-style street map and enter the unfussy yet inviting space. It’s hard to believe this was once a gambling hall, and you’re a stone’s throw from Central Station.
Start with the charcuterie platter and perhaps one of the seasonal blackboard specials. For bistro fare with a twist, try the veal tongue, pickled turnip, salsa verde and almonds, Marlborough King Salmon with miso, radish salad and eggplant, or crispy quail eggs, white anchovy and tarragon mayonnaise.
If you’re after comfort DD’s crispy fried chicken with coleslaw and lime aioli; or pork belly, fennel salt, lime and kimchi, will comply. You can also opt for a choices (and we’d highly recommend this) on the extensive international wine list, daily cheese selection and sweets menu.
Most of the dishes are served on wooden sharing boards to pass around, and you’ll love the attention to detail courtesy of small copper pots, tin cans and small paella pans.
Sharing is caring. We’re as happy for Warren and Mimi as your tummy will be.
