Newtown definitely doesn’t need anymore Thai restaurants. Or burger joints, dive bars, fro yo spots and chocolate bars. What it always needs is more spots away from the hustle and bustle, where you can walk up, sit down and spread out for a meal with friends.
Cuckoo Callay has found the sweet spot in Newtown – good food, great coffee and more room than a crowded corridor or laneway. Located in the snazzy, new-ish square right in front of Newtown station, this cute café is busy but certainly not bursting at the seams like plenty of breakfast spots nearby.
Midweek, the morning commuters crowd around the Cuckoo Coffee Bar for their pre-work caffeine fix but we don’t know how anyone has the willpower to walk away without one of the jumbo muffins sitting on the window sill. Baked in-house, and featuring a different flavour every day, these gigantour muffins are a meal in themselves. We may have had to sample Thursday’s white chocolate and lemon, solely for the sake of research of course.
When it comes to breakfast, Cuckoo Callay certainly isn’t just a coffee and muffin spot – the brand new menu is big and bold. And no, it’s not all about omelettes and Eggs Benedict. Start the day the right way with Birdy Nom Nom; coconut quinoa and date bircher (it’s filling without putting you into a carb coma), shake off a late night with Cinderella’s Breakfast; pumpkin fritters, cured salmon, poached egg and heirloom tomatoes, or get your taste buds firing with Speedy Gonzalez; breakfast burritos with chorizo and turtle bean relish. Don’t forget the huge tea, smoothie and fresh juice menus.
The lunch menu is just as fun and flavoursome, with those cocktails to keep things going until closing time at 4pm.
Next time we’ll be back with our fur babies – the housemade Pupples maple bacon dog treats are pretty popular with the local canine crowd.
