Gone are the show-off sports cars and the hard noisy stone. This month Darlinghurst’s former Ferrari showroom will get a lesson in down-home modesty, courtesy of country bumpkin Cloth Fabric.
Cloth might have been born in a rusty tin shed in rural NSW, but the baby of local artist Julie Paterson has hit no stumbling blocks befriending the well-heeled downtown herd. You might have seen Cloth hanging in swanky restaurants or inner-city penthouses, but it has kept a firm hold on its charming rustic accent.
Each textile is brought into being the old-fashioned way using organic hemp and linen and the dexterous hands of local craftsfolk, and much of the fabrication takes place where the rugged Australian landscape serves as a major source of inspiration for Julie (though good strong cups of tea and her favourite colour Old Lady Red — presumably much different from Ferrari red — help keep the creative process surging).
Cloth’s airy new home will also bubble with a new flavour of creative local flair, with upcycling workshops and a guerilla-style public knit-punk project among the things you might see going down amidst artisan rugs and crafty home décor.
It might be fabric, but materialistic Cloth isn’t.
