From the burger boom to Mexican mania, Sydney’s food trends come and go but when it comes to dumplings, this city is never satiated.
When Din Tai Fung first opened in World Square, it took dumplings to a new level. The foodies flocked to try this international dumpling dynamo – which started as a street stall in Taipei back in 1974 and has gone gang busters ever since – and the crowds followed.
These days you can also get your Din Tai Fung fix at The Star and Westfield Sydney, but that wasn’t enough.
The brand new Din Tai Fung at Westfield Chatswood has opened its doors and is expecting the hordes. With seats for up to 120, and the signature glass kitchen out the front, this is Australia’s biggest Din Tai Fung and we have no doubt the crowds will come.
Din Tai Fung’s signature dish is the dumpling, but the signature, signature dish is the xiao long bao – a plump, pork-filled dumpling that spurts out perfectly seasoned broth when you devour it. Each dumpling is handmade to exactly 6cm in diameter and weighs between 20.8 and 21.2 grams – that’s 20 grams of goodness.
Chatswood’s Din Tai Fung will have a larger menu than the smaller outlets – and will be privy to menu items Din Tai Fung die hard fans previously had to go overseas to try. Think prawn and mango rolls, and a rainbow coloured mix of ‘dumpling gems’ with unexpected fillings like bolognese and cheese.
Don’t worry, if you can’t squeeze in a dumpling fix in the city or don’t live across the bridge, Din Tai Fung Chippendale is on the radar too.
