The Local Taphouse
The Local Taphouse might be new to Darlo but it’s well established in a much older craft. Following the success of its sister pub in St Kilda, Sydneysiders now have a place to drink better beer.
Located on the site of the old Palace Hotel, The Local is the brainchild of documentary filmmaker Steve Jeffares, who wanted a place that focussed on craft beers. It has undergone a two-level refurbishment but still feels unassuming; quasi gentlemen’s club with an industrial feel.
If you don’t know your Pilsner from your Hefeweisen, or your Schwarzbier from your Saison, anyone behind the bar can make your choice more informed. You can drop in on a beer showcase night or the quarterly “SpecTAPular” beer festival; or you can sample up to five different beers in a tasting paddle, beer and history notes optional.
Depending on seasonality there’s an ever changing selection of beers on tap – the count is at 60 already. Most are Australian beers from microbreweries around the country, with a selection of international and limited releases.
A really decent bar, with simply better beer.
