Imagine yourself as a bored, teenage child of a rich, powerful family.
Your life has been mapped out; your birthright, your name, has become a burden. You’re not allowed to make your own choices, not even whom to date or befriend.
Now imagine how enticing escape would become; hormone-driven, chaotic, romantic escape into the arms of a bad boy or girl.
It’s this discontent that Sydney Theatre Company Co-Resident Director Kip Williams explores in his modern-day deft interpretation of one of history’s saddest stories. Williams says, “It’s about rebellion against generations past and the need to escape from a predetermined future … young Romeo and Juliet seek to escape the family ties that entrap them, in search of authentic life experience.”
Swapping Elizabethan frills and frippery for chic contemporary fashions, this re-imagining sees the ideals of the young pair smash up against their families’ expectations with razor-sharp clarity and heartbreaking results.
Eryn Jean Norvill will make her STC debut as Juliet, Dylan Young, fresh from STC and Belvoir Street seasons, will play Romeo and a bevy of some of Australian theatre’s most talented (and hot!) rising stars explore the wonder, passion and pain of first love.
