Geelong has never really been known for top-notch cocktails, and intimate cocktail bars. Until now. Strasse Bar has moved in to The Barking Dog’s back room and is serving up good food, good banter and great drinks.
Leading the charge is Nick Reed (from Melbourne’s 1806) and Paul Marinelli (from Scotchmans Hill Winery) both Geelong born and bred. With a knack for fine libations and knowing Geelong like the back of their hands, they might just be the perfect duo to shake things up – pun intended.
The space feels like it was meant to pop up there. A beautiful wooden back bar, hanging lights and custom street art from Ghost Patrol and interior design from Georgie Mann makes Strasse the kind of place you could lose a few hours.
In line with the more laid back atmosphere of Strasse, the cocktail list is all based on flavour and poison of choice, rather than the classics and ambiguous names. Choose your liquor, your flavours, and how you’d like it served and they will do the rest. The wine keeps things simple as well with a small list, coupled with rotating fine wines.
The food channels street food from around the world like meatballs and fritters as well as serving up a late night menu fit with cheese and nibbles.
If you find yourself passing through Geelong, you’ve now got somewhere for a seriously good drink.
