Thornbury is on the rise when it comes to good places for a feed and a good stiff drink. While cafes and take away joints have been flourishing for a while, Thornbury has still been lacking a bar and eatery vibe. Enter Northern Git. An English bar and eatery of sorts, its being headed up by Michael Slade, ex-head chef at La Luna Bistro. He’s also English born in Yorkshire, which helps. This is his first ownership role, so hats off to him.
When it comes to the menu Slade is bringing some of his meaty past from La Luna over. Start with fried meatballs with pine nuts and aioli, spicy chicken wings with celery and blue cheese, or if meat isn’t your thing the croquettes of artichoke, gorgonzola, lemon, and aioli are a must.
For the larger dishes go for the Git’s meat plate; a mix of duck liver parfait, potted beef, Veneto salami, tete fromage, and rabbit rilette. For a more classic dish you can try the eggplant parmigiana, or the pork schnitzel served with coleslaw and potato aioli.
There is a sweet vs savoury stand off at dessert time with Roqufort served with balsamic shallots and Fromage D’Affinois served with tomato relish on one side with brandy snaps dis he’d up with lemon and vanilla goats milk ricotta, and chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream on the other side.
If you’re there for the drinks look for the crafty English ales and local brews or a 12-year-old Aberfeldy whisky from Speyside as a nightcap perhaps? And on Fridays take part in Firkin Fridays where you’ll drink unpasteurised ale from old-fashioned barrels.
