Pool Parties – they conjure up all sorts of images; bikini clad models by the pool, a hot DJ spinning the latest Euro dance tunes, designer lounges scattered around an infinity pool, breathtaking views of the Caribbean.  At least that’s every R&B music clip; not quite reality.

If your ideal pool party is more about hanging out with friends, sitting on old skool bleachers, listening to chill out music and not having to travel very far to escape the heat, then the Fitzroy Swimming Pool is your pool party host.

SoundWaves is held every Sunday afternoon this month with a respectable program of poolside DJs. There’s a canteen with icy poles (obligatory) and the locals are more excited about cooling down and hanging out in the water than looking like they belong in a music video.

This 50m outdoor heated pool is well loved – after a brief closure in 1994, a community campaign to save the pool saw it re-open and has remained well attended ever since.
