You know how we live on an island? With all that seafood on our doorstep, Melbourne’s prize catch in our already thriving restaurant scene is the very recent opening of Atlantic.
It’s another jewel in the Crown Entertainment Complex and, with a cleverly moody look by Richmond-based interior designers, Blackmilk, Atlantic dishes up a special intimacy, despite its status as Crown’s largest restaurant.
You’ll wish you had the oven (all nine metres of shiny, bespoke beauty) but, with its centre-stage position, you’ll have to settle on watching award-winning Executive Chef Donovan Cooke hover over it instead. Tell yourself that is actually a good thing.
a) He’s better at cooking than you;
b) Could you really handle the oven’s accompanying army of 28 chefs, sous chefs and pasty chefs with the same firm aplomb? Really?
Atlantic takes its inspiration from the hustle of fish markets in yesteryear’s New York and Chicago. Think a decent amount of ambient clatter, mingled with pristine seafood, fresh from the ocean and straight from the pans to your plate.
Even if you can’t remember the 70s, try Atlantic’s contemporary version of the seafood cocktail. One bite and you’ll be hooked.
