Marrickville’s iconic Greek eatery The Yeeros Shop opens its first Inner West outpost in Annandale

Growing up with mums, aunts, and yiayias who make the best food in the world, I’ve always been a bit skeptical about dining out at Greek or Mediterranean restaurants. They rarely compete with the traditional recipes that have been perfected over generations in our home kitchens.

So I have a high bar for Greek and Cypriot food. I’ve called the Inner West my home for over a decade and have had my fair share of underwhelming takeaway experiences (think: salt overload and greasy regrets).

This is my first taste of The Yeeros Shop, which has a loyal following at its iconic Marrickville location. Annandale is their new takeaway venue, with some public seating outside on the street. They have an Aesop-inspired minimalist approach to their branding. It’s refreshing to see a Greek restaurant which doesn’t rely on the typical bright blue and white palette to make a statement. It’s clean, understated aesthetic complements its focus on quality and authenticity.

We arrive around 1pm for a weekeday lunch and it is already bustling. It’s next to my favourite seafood takeaway, FatFish which is much loved by locals. In fact, the owners of FatFish have teamed up with The Yeeros Shop, creating a locally led foodie dream team.

Chicken slouvaki with Greek salad

The menu spans Yeeros (+by the kilo), Snack Packs, Plates, Slouvaki, Skepasti, Vegetarian and Salads. First up we put our forks into the grilled halloumi. Now, halloumi is a must-try at any Greek spot, and they nail it. It is perfectly salty with just the right amount of char and chew—a strong start that sets the tone for the rest of the meal. Trying to keep things a bit lighter, I opt for the chicken souvlaki plate with salad and their iconic fries which are the right side of crispy- not fat, not a string – but just right. The chicken is bursting with Mediterranean flavours—olive oil, oregano, and herbs that transport me back to the Greek islands. The Greek Salad is fresh, crunchy, and a pleasant surprise in a world where side salads often get overlooked.

But the real test? The Yeeros. As a Cypriot, I was hoping for pork, (but that’s only available at their Marrickville location). The lamb is tender and flavourful, we also tuck into a chicken yeeros which is delicious. It’s topped with light yoghurt tzatziki, stuffed with a tomato and onion salad plus crispy chips seasoned with paprika. It is all wrapped up in a soft, warm pita bread which is hands down one of the best I have tasted. We also order a few dips; hummus is subtly smooth and a fiesty chilli mayo – get a fire distinguisher.

So, here’s the bottom line: The Yeeros Shop has officially earned its place as my go-to for Mediterranean cravings. It’s a spot where you can enjoy all the flavours I love without the usual post-meal regret. And with FatFish right next door, I can grab my fish, salad, and Greek fix all in one go. This inner west gem is definitely worth a visit—and I’d be more than happy to take my Auntie.
