Know that saying – The only thing that is constant is change? Applies to our restaurants too, with their tendency to upgrade, down grade, change hands, change vibe. Golden Fields moved on, with parts of it appearing at Supernormal. But now, on Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, Luxembourg Bar & Bistro sits where Golden Fields once was.
Head Chef Chris Watson has become partners with restaurateur Andrew McConnell (Supernormal, Cutler & Co, Cumulus Inc, Moon Under Water, Builders Arms Hotel) for this one. The European style bar and bistro is named after the famous French gardens Jardin du Luxembourg found in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, Luxembourg.
The menu marries more classic dishes, with an expected Melbourne modernity. The space’s relaxed yet elegant finish makes it a perfect spot for any occasion. A bite to eat with a glass of wine, an evening of share plates and friends, or a more formal dining experience.
Start with snacks like smoky eggplant dip with radish and black sesame, or soft shell crab sandwiches with tartar and iceberg lettuce. A raw section and a charcuterie collection complete the smaller items. Larger dishes see whole flounder a la meuniere, 400g dry aged porterhouse with Café de Paris butter and hand cut chips, and the ricotta dumplings with marinated cauliflower and picked onion. Finish the night with a cheese plate, a truffled rachelle toastie or perhaps a baked-to-order chocolate tart with cultured crème Chantilly.
The wine list has a long by-the-glass list, with a heavy French and Italian presence.
This Bar & Bistro is a change you’ll want to embrace.
