Five things to do this Australia Day

Australia Day is one of those days where you can celebrate it just about any way you want. As Aussies we often favour things like sport, a tipple or two, and good music. Can you blame us? Here are some of our picks for Australia Day.

Have a brew or two at Joe’s Bar and Dining Hall

Joe’s Bar and Dining Hall in St Kilda, or affectionately known as Joe’s, is opening the doors to their new beer garden on Australia Day.  From 12pm to 10pm, the drinks will be flowing and the music will be playing. A BBQ will be on from 1pm and in more of an American style, they will be serving up ribs and wings.

Listen to Triple J’s Hottest 100

Rooftop Bars - Campari House 2

Australia Day is one of the most loved days of the year for music lovers. If you’re hanging out to hear who will come in at number one on Triple J’s Hottest 100, you’ll need a great spot to listen. Captain Melville will be playing it live all day while Campari House will be playing it live from their rooftop party. We must also add that your backyard, with friends and a BBQ is another perfect place to listen to the count down.

Head to The Australian Open

 Aus-Open-2-619x250

If you haven’t been to The Australian Open yet, Australia Day may just be for you. Beware of hooligans dressed in just Australian flags making no sense, but it does get you in the spirit of the day. Note: it is unlikely that an Australian will be playing. Pack the sunscreen, a hat, and your cheering muscles. Let’s hope it’s a five setter.

AusFest Cider & Beer Festival

 Cider House

Brunswick Street Cider House is hosting the annual AusFest Cider & Beer Festival. For just $28 a head you’ll get your hands on your own stein, a slow cooked pork roll, dessert of custard apple crumble and refills all day.  Fill up your cup with any one of 22 tap ciders or beers. There will also be DJs from 2pm downstairs and the Triple J hottest 100 upstairs.

Watch The Castle at Moonlight Cinemas.

 Moonlight Cinema

It doesn’t get much more Australian than sitting in the Royal Botanic Gardens at Moonlight Cinema watching The Castle. If you haven’t seen The Castle, prepare yourself for some serious Aussie comedy. If you have, quote quietly. Go, get a good spot, and get ready to feel nostalgic. Snacks and burgers optional.
