Fathers Day Gift Guide – it’s a boozy one!

Did you know that Mothers Day in Australia is by far one of the biggest global celebrations in dollars per capita spent? No one loves their mums the way we do. But let’s call it in for our Dads too. Here are some ideas to treat him!

A Taste of Ukraine: Nemiroff De Luxe Vodka launches in Australia

This is a vodka with a heart and a sustainability cause, actively supporting war victims in Ukraine and have donated over $720,000 AUD so far. They’re eco-warriors, reducing energy consumption through digitization and they recycle 100% of their waste. The vodka dates back to 1872, nestled in the historic town of Nemyriv. It’s made from lush Ukrainian wheat, pure waters, and local ingredients and eleven stages of natural filtration. We found it had a smooth, full-bodied flavour with flower notes, a hint of juniper. A thoughtful way to give back to dad and to those in need who may have lost theirs. Available to purchase for $62.99 at Dan Murphy’s.

Largo Brewing – Clean Larger

Move over, ho-hum brews—there’s a new lager in town, and it’s strutting its eco-conscious stuff as Australia’s first beer, accredited by Climate Active.
Its carbon neutrality has been achieved by purchasing offsets in Greencollar’s Darling River Eco project. Oli and Louis from the indie band Lime Cordiale swapped their guitar picks for brewing paddles. Their mission? To create a lager that’s as refreshing as a coastal breeze but kinder to Mother Earth. Its crisp and clean and just won Country Winner for Light Lager at the 2024 World Beer Awards. Cheers to that! RRP $19.99 for six at major retailers and Dans.

Ezra Brooks Bourbon Whiskey

Non-age statement bourbons are dime-a-dozen these days. Think of this one as the dependable US of A friend. It has the classic bourbon scents of charred oak, vanilla, and caramel with a light oak, pepper and nutty finish. Ezra Brooks is a Kentucky based distillery and has been creating happiness at Fathers Day since 1957. It is made in the Lux Row Distillery on the famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Available to buy from Dan Murphy’s and BWS, RRP: $63.99.

Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey

Teeling Single Grain Irish Whiskey is crafted using a mash of 95% corn and 5% malted barley that has been column distilled then matured exclusively in Central American Red Wine casks. It’s a lovely drop and we tried ours neat and then in cocktail with liquid gold ( 50ml small batch, 10ml Single grain, 3 dash of Angostura Bitters and gold leaf to garnish – just stir to combine). The Single grain has a lovely red-berry and tannic profile, with notes of floral, vanilla sweetness, rum-raisin and allspice. The finish is long and warming, which leaves a lingering sweetness, spice and notes of oak. Available at both BWS and Dan Murphy’s, RRP: from $71 – $78.99.

Tomintoul Merlot Wine Cask Finish Whisky

Tomintoul, known as ‘the gentle dram,’ captures the essence of the Scottish Highlands’ serene beauty. The distillery’s location is set in the Cairngorms, fed by pure water from the Ballantruan spring. To listen to Master Distiller, Robert Fleming, talk about whisky is pure poetry. He is a fourth generation Speyside distiller, and has been the custodian of Tomintoul for more than 30 years using traditional production techniques that stretch back hundreds of years. The wine finish gives it lovely fruit forward nose with heaps of berries, jammy palate flavours with a touch of tobacco. So easy and drinkable in an approachable way. Available for purchase at $76.99 from Dan Murphy’s.

Rewild Sustainable Shiraz

For the dad who cares about you and the environment these wines are made with minimal intervention, Rewild varietals are home to the Southern Murray Darling and the grapes that grow there. They boost soil health, ramp up biodiversity by adding microbes to the vineyard’s soil to increase nutrition efficiency. When the grapes are pressed, all seeds skins and stalks are turned into compost (8,000+ tonnes a year) and returned to the soil – nourishing the vines. Then they recycle everything they can – from vineyard trellising of up to 150 million litres of water every single year – continuing to work towards a 100% renewable. And the wine? We try their Shiraz. Its super easy drinking, deep red, with berry and raspberry flavours and oh so soft tannins. Vegan friendly too! At Dans $9.99 for a bottle.

Just launched: Heineken® Silver, the smoothest beer in Australia

Brewed at an ice-cold -1°C, this beer offers a crisp, refreshing taste with a less bitter finish, thanks to its unique brewing process that removes rough-tasting tannins. We really enjoyed its refreshing taste without the guilt – only 95 calories and 3.2 grams of carbs per serving, It still has that signature fruity aroma and malty flavour of the original Heineken. It’s the perfect choice for a smooth, satisfying sip that you know D ad will like. Available at all good beer stockists (RRP: $56 for a 24 pack).

Son of a Nun Beers – Mid, Low and No !

Australian Beer Company (ABCo) has created a new brand which is all about ‘better for you’ drinks. Born out of the belief that no one should be left out from having a toast with mates. There are three in the range.

Low Carb: This ia an ultra-low carb beer with tropical hop aroma, it’s a crisp brew with a mild hop bitterness that adds a slight herbal and citrus note. The Mid Strength is my favourite. Its still a low carb beer with tropical fruit like hop aroma and more fruity than the low carb. The Zero Alcohol: Has a nice crisp taste and little hop bitterness, but it does have some malty profile with subtle delicate toffee notes, all in a light body with soft carbonation. See here for local stockists

Curly Lewis – Limited edition Wildcard Coffee Stout

They say “The shorter the distance between you, a cold beer, and the tank that beer was brewed in, the better your quality of life.” Clever chaps those beer brewing folks. Well my evening was certainly pepped by by their new stout. Infused with Will & Co famous Three-Oh-Three coffee from 100% Arabaca beans, oats, ale, munich, crystal & dark malt. Thats one big party in my glass it bold and delicious and 6%. Buy here RRP$75 for 16 cold ones.

About the author

Karen’s corporate job back in the UK had included entertaining clients in some of the best restaurants. This ultimately sparked a curiosity 'Just how do they do that?' (she confesses she was brought up on meat and vegetables, so this was all very exciting). Currently a Mr & Mrs Smith 'Tastemaker', she’s flashpacked around the world, learning about wine, experiencing different cultures and cuisines and had a two- year love affair with it all. Originally from England, she finally settled in Australia and continues to be besotted by food, wine and travel preferring to focus on the luxury end of town (thread count does matter).
