Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard Musical hits Melbourne

What a treat, a night at the theatre. No matter your age, an evening at musical is always magical.

Walking into the stunning Princess Theatre in Melbourne, I get a glimmer of excitement. Currently on stage is Sunset Boulevard, an epic show by Andrew Lloyd Webber with stunning effects, dramatic music, and a heartfelt, twisted story, that leaves us guessing the entire time

As I pleasingly switch my phone on silent, (a simple joy in itself) sit down and wait for curtains to open, I peacefully enjoy the timelessness of the grand and opulent, neo gothic theatre.

As it begins, we hear the echo of vibrant instruments, and watch the façade of characters engulfed in their tale. While the music of Sunset Boulevard hasn’t changed since its first performance in the 90’s, the astounding effects and backdrop have revolutionized through time, and we’re brought into the show as if we’re living it. The astounding trepidation of the storyline of an aged former film star Norma Desmond who takes a liking to her young and budding screen writer, all leading to a twisted, murderous tale. Coupled with dramatic music, the two acts keeps us in suspense and at the edge of our seats as we experience an emotional journey.

And for those voices. The famous Sarah Brightman has made her debut and is back better than ever, playing Norma Desmond, lavish star of the show. Her powerful voice is captivating, and as I stare at all the talented performers live faces on stage, I feel my entire body swell up with goosebumps of awe.

For 3 hours, we revel in humour watching the costumes of old school fashion. Slick greased hair with a one side part, beige- brown suits and men in skinny ties. Back to the days, when smoking was cool again, and beautiful women had full bodies with round bottoms and voluptuous breasts, (amen, let’s bring that back)

A night at the theatre is always magical. A journey into Sunset Boulevard, is an even sweeter treat.
