We’ve seen a lot of American bars pop up, and European wine bars, but now we’ve got our own Australian themed cocktail bar. Local spirits and jaffles a plenty.
Tucked into the old Bar Paradiso site on Greeves Street near Johnston and Smith, Bad Frankie is right in the heart of the inner north. Owner Sebastian Costello thinks it’s high time we had a place to flaunt local spirits, and that’s just what he does.
While some of us might not be able to list that many local spirits on our fingers, Costello has us covered with Whiskies from Tasmania’s Lark, Victoria’s Bakery Hill, and Starward, and Gin from Four Pillars and Great Southern, to name a few. We can of course expect the expected with West Winds Gin in there as well. These local spirits are whipped into tasty and interesting cocktails. Think the Fitz Roy with Maidenii Sweet Vermouth, Overreem Port Cask Whisky and Mister Bitters.
When it comes to the food, the humble Jaffle is king with chef Michelle Boyle covering classics to the crazy. Cheese and Vegemite are a prerequisite, the Shroooom is filled with mushrooms done in garlic, red wine, and thyme, and feta. If sweet is your thing, go for the Lamington, which sees hot jam, chocolate soaked sponge, coconut, and a touch of cream. Hello.
