If Easter and High Tea had a love child, it would be QTea at Sydney’s QT hotel. This sweet sanctuary in the lush theatrical QT lounge, has been designed by the master of ganache, pâtissier Adriano Zumbo for chocolate lovers favourite time of year.
The QT hotel in the heart of Sydney CBD is ultra-modern and quirky. From staff to styling, it stands out because, well, it was designed that way. David Seargeant, founder of the QTs in Australia loves boutique hotels and he strives for each location to be fashioned around its location and inspired by its surroundings. This QT on Market Street next to the grand State Theatre is full of drama from the lush, plush furnishings to the digital art and funky playlist.
Sheer black curtains cover the windows of the moody-lit lounge. The room is full of travellers and locals nestled around an abundance of cushions on velvet occasional chairs and leather settees. Glamorous hosts get us comfortable and then present the modern high tea stand. Think doll house for petite treats. Adorable looking sweets top the tower with savoury in the basement. Best to start at the ground floor with a refreshing glass of Mumm and work your way up.
There are no pedestrian cucumber sandwiches to be seen here, the smoked salmon & caviar blini and prawn with lime chilli mayo brioche roll are succulent seafood bites. The chicken caesar slider, is a delish salad mouthful of caesar-ness, minus the slider. Use the buttery hotX scone with tassie strawberry myrtle jam and clotted cream in the mid-levels like your palate cleanser before commencing the feast of fluorescent delicacies.
This is where Zumbo shines, the macaroons crowning the tea tower include creamy passionfruit, a smooth mint caramel and it wouldn’t be Easter without an HCB take. Zumbos’ signature crispy shell with flavourful fillings won’t disappoint. The “Great Egg Hunt” tart with hazelnut praline, salted caramel and chocolate is the definition of decadent. Although it is the super cute, glazed animals who steal the show. Luv Sum Bunny is a melting mouthful of coconut, rose, lychee. The fluoro yellow Miss Chicky, a lemon yuzu and mango cake with glossy white chocolate glaze is almost too pretty to eat. But you will eat him, because he is delicious!
You’ll be spoilt with this experience, by the delightful hosts, in this beautiful lounge, taking in this degustation of delicacies. Stay posted for future QTea events, with Mother’s day in a few weeks.
