Sometimes all you want is to fix yourself a stiff drink, or get someone else to fix one for you. Next time you get home and reach for the booze cupboard, or find yourself at the bar, try these new spirits.
Smoked Bacon Bourbon
From the team who brought you the awesome Eau De Vie cocktail bars (Sydney and Melbourne) as well as The Roosevelt Bar & Diner comes The Experimental Spirits Co. Their first product to hit the shelves will be their Smoked Bacon Bourbon. The company sources genuine American bourbons, which then undergo what’s known as a ‘fat washing’ process, which allows the smoked bacon flavour to be integrated into the whiskey. This whiskey is then thoroughly filtered – up to ten times – and then bottled and wax sealed, all by hand.
The Smoked Bacon Bourbon is available through the Speakeasy Group venues including Eau De Vie (Sydney and Melbourne) and The Roosevelt.
Mr. Bitters
If you’re a fan of the good old fashioned cocktail, it’s likely you’ve been enjoying bitters for a long time. If mixing drinks isn’t your forte, you may not have realized. Sazeracs and Old Fashioneds for a start use the wonderful ingredient. Mr. Bitters, from the team behind Lily Blacks, and many other drinking establishments in Melbourne, know a thing or two about bitters with hundreds lining the walls of Lilys. They wanted to spread the love and show people what it can really do, as well as creating something a little different. Three unique flavours will launch the brand: Fig and Cinnamon, Honeyed Apricot and Smoked Hickory, and Pink Grapefruit and Agave.

Quinoa based Vodka from FAIR
Quinoa is in everything these days, such a trendy little thing. But even we were surprised when we heard FAIR were making a quinoa vodka. The spirit is made in France using 90% organic quinoa from Bolivia. It’s gluten free and Fairtrade, which is something rarely talked about in the world of spirits. They also make a goji berry liquor. Superfood cocktail, anyone?

Avión Espresso Tequila
A fan of an Espresso Martini? What about an espresso martini with tequila as the leading man? Well, this new tequila from Avión may just be your new best friend. Made with real coffee rather than coffee syrup, it’s packed with flavour, and that all-too-family tequila punch. How many is too many?
Avion is available exclusively through Merivale venues.
West Winds Gin
The cheeky Aussie Gin brand are at it again with their latest, serious gin. To sit next to their existing delicious gins The Sabre and The Cutlass, we welcome The Broadside. In a nod to naval crews who sipped their gin while at high seas and fighting pirates, The Broadside sits at 58% and is a real punch of flavour.
Speaking of flavour, the savoury drop sees native Australian sea parsley and Margaret River sea salt. There are nice citrus notes accompanying the juniper.
It’s limited edition folks, so don’t waste any time.
