I walk right past it the first time – so well does it assimilate into the busy Surry streetscape. Google Maps yells at me, and I backtrack.
There she is. Tucked quietly behind a controlled access door, there’s no blazing signage to indicate that within this smart space lies Surry Hills’ newest urban respite; thus the hotel’s name – 202 Elizabeth. The bottom floor has a plush seating area by the entry and a lovely outdoor courtyard, ‘the garden’, which is leafy and inviting with pot plants and soft lighting. Reception is here, as is the entry to what will soon be a wine cellar, where the hotel plans to hold immersive events like champagne and oyster celebrations and sashimi and sake nights for locals and guests.
The rooftop is a beautiful space with cosy areas for cuddling up or sofas for mingling with larger parties. Views of the city twinkle like stars and it’s the ideal setting for a nice glass of something sparkling before going out, or after coming back in. There are 38 rooms in this six-storey building, and no two are alike. Several include private balconies, and all go above and beyond with their upscale amenities from Aussie cult brands, Piyama (super soft dressing gowns) and Hunter Labs (vegan toiletries). The mini bar, too, is a testament to the way the small things have been well thought out. It’s complimentary and includes organic beverages from Mineral Springs Co as well as salty and sweet bites.
The room of my choosing is the apartment-sized Lizzy, on the fifth floor. Curved walls and a cane sofa, gorgeous bedding, thoughtful decor, and chevron timber flooring make it seem more like a home than a hotel room. In the separate bath, with its jade marble backsplash and enormous double shower, I only have eyes for the egg-shaped tub. Lights on dimmers are a big YES from me, and electronics that don’t require a PhD to use are always a plus. Sleeping is quiet with little street noise despite the smack-bang-in-Surry-Hills location, and the [convenient] proximity to Central Station, just a few minutes walk away.
In the morning, prepare for a big, beautiful breakfast. A bounty of seasonal fruit, fresh pastry and other surprises arrive by hamper along with the all-important coffee or tea per your preferences.
Did I mention 202 Elizabeth is pet-friendly, too? They love your dog as much as you do.
And no one under the age of 16 is allowed – this is an adults-only oasis. Hallelujah!
