Fujifilm’s Instax Mini LiPlay Instant Camera blends retro-polaroid with modern digital capabilities
The idea of a polaroid instant camera has been around for quite some time now. Ever since 1948 where a camera called the Model 95 was introduced in a department store in Boston, people have loved the idea of being able to instantly capture and keep their photo-memories. Re-introduced as a retro alternative to an increasingly digital world, now instant cameras can pack some serious punch, and at the forefront of this is the Fujifilm Instax Mini LiPlay Instant Camera.
When first considering an instant camera, what needs to be noted is that they are super easy to use. Rather than fiddling with tonnes of digital settings it really is as simple as point and shoot. You still need to be responsible for things like correct framing and making sure there is appropriate light for the shot (there is an inbuilt flash too) but for the most part the process is simple; choose the photo subject, point the camera, press the button and within minutes you are in possession of your own little instant photograph.
Where the Fujifilm Instax Mini LiPlay Instant Camera is a little different from the instant cameras of old is how it works with other digital technology. It features a built-in lithium battery, which gives you enough charge to snap away 100 photos at a time. You can even connect the camera to a smartphone via Bluetooth and the Instax app which then allows you to use the camera as a printer for your phone was well as remote shooting. Within the camera itself you have enough memory to store about 45 photo files, but Daily Addict recommends picking up a Micro SD card to give the memory a boost. For Weddings and Birthdays a few of these cameras equipped with a SD card would make for a fun way to capture the event and would be easily used by guests of all ages.
Where this writer was truly impressed was with a function that allows for sound to be recorded and added to the printed photographs. Through technical wizardry far too advanced for us to understand, when you press the microphone button on the front of the camera and choose the option to record sound, a QR code is created and printed onto the photos. Once someone scans the QR code, the recorded message is then played out on the device. Super cool.
Compatible with Fuji Instax Mini instant film it only takes 12 seconds for the photos to print and within the camera’s menus you are able to choose from 30 different frames and a variety of filters. In order to truly make the most of this function this writer would have preferred a slightly larger display as the current 2.7” one isn’t quite big enough to make out fine details. It also is really very easy to start snapping away and realising that before you know it all the polaroid film is gone. For $49.95 you can by a refill with 40 more polaroids to use, these can be bought from most camera stores and the retailer you purchased the device from.
