Getaway Guide to Luxury Holiday Homes on the South Coast

The Headland by Dovecote

The Headland by Dovecote – Best Luxury ocean-front farm weekender in Gerrigong

What does it feel like to stand on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean like Cathy from Wuthering Heights? The wind billowing in your hair, you turn around to look at your multimillion-dollar house, two perfectly architect designed cantilever sections perched on top of an escarpment overlooking Werri Werri beach. With your own farmland, cows and sea for companions you are in good company. White pebble stepping stones lead to the front double height doors opening into an infinity-like glass corridor with each of the four bedrooms to the right. The main bedroom is a haven for any hedonistic rock star, the low-slung king-size bed looks tiny against an entire wall of views and a sexy black sofa to chillax. Enter the living area and take a peak – Storm room, Movie room and more. Masculine lines and feminine touches blend with low slung sofas, caramel leather day beds, paintings, cow hides, rose gold mirrors and copper touches. The Miele kitchen has a curated pantry with luxury goodies such as Veuve Fourney & Fils champagne, organic coconut yoghurt, smoked bacon, chocolates and a cupboard bursting with spices. Inside our compound is a private swimming pool, gardens and an all important firepit. This is the place billionaires build and we have the opportunity to escape to see what its like…its soooo good you just don’t want to go back to normality.

Bannisters Ocean Front – Best for Views & Cooks, Mollymook

Opening the blue double entrance doors, everything changes – the only thing your eyes take in are that view.  This three bedroom house is set on several cascading levels from entry bedroom level, lounge, terrace, garden, lower terrace (with a fire pit) and then boom! The trees and ocean.
Bannisters Ocean Front is just a few houses down the road from
Rick Stein’s Bannisters by the Sea. Many holiday homes are functional, often valuing occupancy efficiency over customer experience not here. This is the place for cooks who love the ocean. What a treat. The kitchen is equipped like a Navy seal! Top notch branded appliances Fissler, Circulon, Luigi Bormoli, Le Creuset, Rick Stein and Jamie Oliver. Raid the cupboards for board games. It’s got a timber sauna and the master bedroom has an ensuite with a stand alone bath. With Moolymook beaches on your doorstep and Cuppit’s winery down the road there is lot to distraction your attention, however, this is a home to soak up the sunshine on the upper deck, BBQ like a demon, take in the views and soak up the best of the south coast.

Mandala Beach House – Best for large groups, Callala Bay

It’s hard not to say woooaahhh when you open the huge front door and walk down the long hallway which stretches the entire length of the house – all we can focus on is that swimming pool! Mandala is a brand new house and it is thoughtfully designed. Every bedroom has an ensuite with moody dark grey tiles, white porcelain basins and large showers. Custom wall holders show off full size Leif Botanicals products so there’s no need for twister style antics scrambling around the floor during your private rain shower! With four bedrooms downstairs and two on the upper floor so take your pick.  They say the kitchen is the heart of the house, it sure is. Our private chef, Jonny from Citrus Catering cooks us up a storm on our first evening! The large balcony overlooking the bay makes the lounge feel like it extends into infinity. We are rewarded with amber sunrises in the mornings whilst the low slung lounge furniture provides uninterrupted views from the kitchen. With a beautiful swimming pool at the back, entertainers BBQ, built in fridge and green gardens, this house has a lot to offer – it is contemporary, beautifully styled and oh so lovable!

Bay Keepers – Best for personalised experiences, Jervis Bay

Our holiday starts the minute we get into the car. We are following our ‘Private Itinerary’ which is a curated journey from Sydney. We are told to ‘ask for Paulina’ at the The Berry Tea Shop. So mysterious, so exciting! We get our tea, scones and drive onwards to Jim’s Wild Oyster Farm set on the edge of Crookhaven River, which has been in the family for generations. Daughter Sally shares how their rock oysters are spawned, developed and grown into the 3 year old’s we are about to eat. They are delicious, especially paired with a bowl of prawns and a lot of gratitude. We arrive at Bay Keepers (part of the Supercalla Private Properties Group) and founder Bede puts champagne in our hands and guides us around the house. The attention to detail is everywhere. This is a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house with exposed brick walls, black and white rugs, comfy sofa and stylish armchairs. Bedrooms are styled with robes, slippers and even the bathroom has artisan salts and large toiletries. Not only are we loving the handwritten blackboard welcoming us to Bay Keepers but we have our own private dining experience ready to go! A stylish personalised menu reveals dinner for the night (instructions on the back), printed with our names and includes crab linguini and petit fours in the fridge. Within 10 minutes we have whipped up dinner. GOOD- night!

About the author

Karen’s corporate job back in the UK had included entertaining clients in some of the best restaurants. This ultimately sparked a curiosity 'Just how do they do that?' (she confesses she was brought up on meat and vegetables, so this was all very exciting). Currently a Mr & Mrs Smith 'Tastemaker', she’s flashpacked around the world, learning about wine, experiencing different cultures and cuisines and had a two- year love affair with it all. Originally from England, she finally settled in Australia and continues to be besotted by food, wine and travel preferring to focus on the luxury end of town (thread count does matter).
